IMAGG Insists on Imo Governorship of Owerri Zone Extraction

 ...Begins Search for God-Fearing Candidate

By Kelechi Ugo

As political activities gradually gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, a prominent socio-political group, Imo Advocacy for Good Governance (IMAGG), has reiterated its strong stance that the next governor of Imo State must come from the Owerri Zone.

This resolution formed a major highlight during the group’s stakeholders’ meeting held on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at Rockview Hotel, Owerri.

Present at the meeting were the Director-General of IMAGG, Ambassador Isaac Chigozie Udeh; the State Women Leader, Lady Dr. Sophia Orji; Zonal Deputy Director-Generals; State Director of Media and Communications, Comrade Kelechi Ugo; as well as Local Government Coordinators.

In his address, Ambassador Udeh emphasized that it was time to depart from the traditional political order in the state and champion a more inclusive and equitable approach to governance. He stressed that IMAGG is fully grassroots-oriented, with presence in all 305 political wards across Imo State.

“We have adopted a unique, grassroots-based mobilization formula,” Udeh stated. “Our strategy includes the formation of booth-level units with two men and two women assigned to safeguard votes on election day.”

He insisted that a God-fearing candidate from the Owerri Zone must emerge as governor in 2027, adding that the group is currently in the process of identifying such a candidate. According to him, ward officers will be inaugurated soon as part of IMAGG’s efforts to ensure effective coordination at the grassroots level.

Udeh also recalled that since 1999, the Owerri Zone has continually supported candidates from both Orlu and Okigwe Zones for the governorship position. He called for reciprocal support from those zones in the spirit of fairness and political equity.

Echoing similar sentiments, former Commissioner for Agriculture in Imo State, Hon. Barr. Udo Agoha, who represented the National Leader of IMAGG, Chief Osita Opara, stressed that it was time for Owerri Zone to produce the next governor.

According to Agoha, “Owerri Zone is home to numerous qualified, God-fearing, and development-driven individuals who have the capacity to lead Imo State, restore its lost glory, and address its socioeconomic and infrastructural challenges.”

He further urged political actors and stakeholders from Okigwe and Orlu Zones to support the Owerri Zone for the sake of justice, equity, and the sustainable development of Imo State.

“We are not just here to express our commitment to the 2027 governorship project; we are here to declare our readiness to vote and protect our votes. The IMAGG organization is solidly behind Chief Osita Opara, and we believe the time has come for Owerri to lead,” Agoha stated.

Also speaking at the event, the State Women Leader, Lady Dr. Sophia Orji, announced plans for the upcoming IMAGG Women Summit scheduled to hold on August 30, 2025. The summit will bring together at least 10 women delegates from each of the 27 local government areas in the state, as part of broader efforts to enhance women’s involvement in the political process.

As the 2027 governorship race draws nearer, IMAGG has firmly positioned itself as a force pushing for equity and good governance in Imo State, with a clear agenda to ensure the emergence of a capable and principled leader from Owerri Zone.
