Prominent philanthropist, businessman, and Labour Party stalwart, Basil Maduka, has emerged as the party's consensus candidate for the Owerri Zone (Imo East Senatorial District) Senate seat ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Maduka secured the party's ticket unopposed following a selection process conducted by the Labour Party Electoral Committee from Abuja. The announcement was made at the party's state secretariat in Owerri over the weekend.

His emergence has been widely welcomed by party faithful across the senatorial district, with many describing it as a strategic move that reflects the confidence reposed in his leadership, grassroots engagement, and longstanding commitment to community development.

Speaking shortly after being declared the candidate, a visibly elated Maduka expressed gratitude to party members for the confidence shown in him. He described his emergence as a testament to the growing strength and unity of the Labour Party.

The Labour Party chieftain also emphasized the principle of equity and fairness within the Owerri Zone, arguing that it is now the turn of the Ahiazu Mbaise/Ezinihitte Mbaise Federal Constituency to produce the senator for the district. According to him, the constituency has not occupied the seat for about 27 years, despite other federal constituencies in the zone having had opportunities to do so.

He identified the four federal constituencies that make up the Owerri Zone as:

Owerri Municipal/Owerri North/Owerri West Federal Constituency

Aboh Mbaise/Ngor Okpala Federal Constituency

Ahiazu Mbaise/Ezinihitte Mbaise Federal Constituency

Mbaitoli/Ikeduru Federal Constituency

Maduka noted that the remaining constituency yet to benefit from the rotational arrangement is Ahiazu Mbaise/Ezinihitte Mbaise, stressing that he possesses the experience, capacity, and commitment required to effectively represent the district in the Senate.

Track Record of Grassroots Empowerment

Highlighting his political journey and social interventions, Maduka described himself as a grassroots politician who has consistently invested in the welfare of ordinary citizens across Imo State.

According to him, through platforms such as the Basil Maduka Movement and Basil Maduka Organization, he has carried out empowerment programmes, educational support initiatives, healthcare interventions, and other humanitarian projects across the state's 27 local government areas and 305 electoral wards.

He stated that his interventions have particularly supported women, youths, and vulnerable groups, including annual assistance to women during August meetings and various community development programmes aimed at improving living standards.

Vision for Owerri Zone

Maduka expressed concern over the rising rate of unemployment among graduates and youths in the district, pledging to focus on economic empowerment and wealth creation if elected.

He said his primary objective in the Senate would be to provide effective representation, attract development opportunities, and create sustainable empowerment programmes capable of reducing poverty and unemployment.

"My goal is to use the office of the senator to empower my people, create opportunities for them, and be a strong voice for the Owerri Zone," he said.

He further described the Labour Party as a people-centred movement dedicated to advancing the interests of ordinary Nigerians and promised to remain accessible to constituents across the district's nine local government areas.

"I will be a servant to the people. My doors will always remain open, and I will be accessible whenever they need me," he assured.

Maduka is no stranger to the political landscape of Imo State. In the 2023 elections, he contested for the Owerri Zone Senate seat under the platform of the People's Democratic Party (PDP).

Beyond politics, he is widely known for his philanthropic activities and community development efforts. He serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Virgin Group, an oil and gas conglomerate headquartered in Port Harcourt.

Over the years, he has earned recognition for numerous empowerment programmes, educational sponsorships, medical outreaches, and humanitarian interventions that have positively impacted communities across Imo State.

With his emergence as Labour Party candidate, political observers believe the race for the Owerri Zone Senate seat in 2027 has gained a significant contender whose campaign is expected to focus heavily on equity, grassroots development.
