 Killings: Ebonyi Governor Relaxes Amasiri Curfew, Schools to Remain Closed

Governor of has relaxed the curfew earlier imposed on in Afikpo North Local Government Area, following the recent killings of people from the Okporojo community in Osso-Edda, Afikpo South.

The governor announced the adjustment on Tuesday while briefing journalists after a State Security Council meeting held at the Government House in Centenary City, Abakaliki.

Under the revised directive, the curfew in Amasiri will now run from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. daily. The restriction was previously enforced from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 a.m. as part of emergency measures to contain tensions and restore order in the affected communities.

Despite the relaxation, Governor Nwifuru stated that schools in the area will remain closed pending the outcome of ongoing security investigations. He emphasized that additional security measures have been put in place to prevent further violence and to ensure justice for the victims.

The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, noting that security agencies have been directed to intensify efforts to apprehend all those connected to the attacks.

He further disclosed that suspects already arrested in connection with the crisis between Amasiri and the Okporojo community would be promptly charged to court.

“We have agreed to review the curfew to run from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. daily. More stringent measures will be implemented to demonstrate our commitment to protecting lives. Those arrested in connection with the crisis will be charged to court,” the governor said.

Governor Nwifuru assured residents that the state government remains resolute in restoring lasting peace to the affected areas and bringing perpetrators of the violence to justice.
