The Imo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to securing the safe and prompt release of Hon. Ngozi Ogbu, a former Chairman of Okigwe Local Government Area and ex-member of the Imo State House of Assembly, who was abducted last week by unknown assailants.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation and Strategy, Hon. Declan Emelumba, the government strongly condemned the kidnapping, describing it as a “brazen and lawless act.” Emelumba noted that relevant security agencies have been mobilized and all necessary mechanisms activated to ensure Ogbu’s release.
“The Imo State Government assures the public that it is doing everything within its power to secure the safe release of Hon. Ngozi Ogbu,” the statement read.
The government also issued a stern warning to political actors, urging them to refrain from using the unfortunate incident to score political points. According to Emelumba, attempts to politicize Ogbu’s abduction are not only insensitive but may further compromise his safety.
“Politicians, especially those who have in the past fanned the flames of insecurity in the state, are advised to desist from making political capital out of Hon. Ogbu’s ordeal. Such actions trivialize the gravity of the situation and endanger his life,” the statement added.
Describing the kidnapped politician as a husband, father, and citizen, the government called for collective concern and support in addressing the issue rather than divisive rhetoric.
The statement concluded with a reassurance of the government’s ongoing efforts to safeguard the lives and property of all residents, pledging continued collaboration with security agencies to keep the state secure.
