The President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Senator Emmanuel Mbata, has dismissed as false and unfounded recent reports suggesting that the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization has barred Peter Obi and other prominent Igbo politicians from contesting against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking in a statement issued on Thursday, Senator Mbata categorically refuted the claims, describing them as "baseless misinformation" designed to mislead the public and sow division.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo has not, at any time, issued a directive or taken any position to prevent any Igbo son or daughter from pursuing their legitimate political ambitions,” he said. “We remain committed to the democratic rights of all Nigerians, including our own, to contest any political office of their choosing.”

The statement comes amid growing speculation that Ohanaeze had moved to align politically with President Tinubu's administration ahead of the 2027 general elections. The rumors, widely circulated on social media and some online platforms, implied that the organization was discouraging potential challengers from the Southeast region.

Senator Mbata emphasized that Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s core mission remains the protection and promotion of Igbo interests within the Nigerian federation, and not political interference or partisan endorsement.

“The strength of our democracy lies in inclusivity and the freedom of choice. No credible organization committed to national progress will seek to silence or marginalize its own people,” he added.

The denial from the Ohanaeze leadership serves as a clarification amid the politically charged atmosphere, reaffirming the organization's neutrality and support for democratic principles.

Analysts say the development is likely to reassure supporters of Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, and other Igbo politicians who may be considering presidential bids in the upcoming 2027 elections.

As Nigeria moves closer to another electoral cycle, Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s reaffirmed stance signals a call for unity, transparency, and respect for individual political rights across the country.
