Ebonyi Man Treks from Lagos to Abakaliki to Honour Governor Nwifuru, Faces Mixed Reactions
A man identified as Jeremiah Obaji Nworu has sparked nationwide conversation after embarking on a long-distance trek from Lagos to Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, in appreciation of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru. His mission, he says, is to honour the Governor for restoring peace in Ezza Effium and across the state, as well as for his ongoing infrastructural strides.
Jeremiah, who began his journey two days ago, has been met with a wave of both praise and criticism online. While supporters see his action as a bold and commendable show of patriotism and gratitude, others have labeled it as mere clout-chasing and attention-seeking.
Some critics have gone as far as mocking him, alleging that he is jobless and hungry. “It’s only a mad man that would embark on such a journey,” one comment read. Others dismissed the trek as a publicity stunt or a waste of time and energy.
However, in a passionate statement defending Jeremiah, Polycarp Obinna Alegu, a public commentator and close associate of the trekker, refuted these claims. According to Alegu, Jeremiah is neither poor nor idle, but rather a successful entrepreneur and family man.
“He is a university graduate, a landlord in both Lagos and Abakaliki, and owns a thriving business with tenants who pay over a million naira annually. This is not the action of a desperate or jobless man,” Alegu stated.
He further explained that Jeremiah was once a critic of the Nwifuru administration but was moved by the Governor’s success in restoring peace in the long-troubled Ezza Effium area. Alegu argued that Jeremiah’s journey should be seen as a symbolic act of reconciliation, appreciation, and hope.
“Those celebrating negative news about Ebonyi are quick to attack someone like Jerry who is promoting a positive narrative. If he had trekked away from the state in protest, many would have praised him,” he added.
The statement emphasized that trekking through multiple states on foot, especially under the current climate of insecurity and economic hardship, is no small feat. Supporters believe Jeremiah’s journey shines a light on the significant progress made under Governor Nwifuru’s leadership and should be acknowledged as such.
Calls have been made for the public to support Jeremiah emotionally and logistically to complete his trek safely. His defenders insist that his mission is not only personal but also symbolic of a larger story—one of peace, progress, and the changing narrative of Ebonyi State.
