The Ebonyi State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ilang Donatus, has described the annual August Meeting as a vital platform for promoting unity, peace, and development among women, especially those in rural communities.

Dr. Donatus stated this on Saturday during the Ikwo/Ezza South Federal Constituency August Meeting held at Blessed Martin’s International School of Science and Technology, Ohatekwe Amagu, Ikwo Local Government Area.

The event was hosted by Chief Mrs. Mary Chinedu Ogah, wife of the House of Representatives Member for Ikwo/Ezza South, Hon. Comrade Chinedu Ogah.

According to the Commissioner, bringing women together under one umbrella goes beyond celebration but also forms part of governance and inclusivity.

“What we are witnessing here is not just merrymaking but capacity building. There are events centred on women, free medical services, social activities, and empowerment packages. All of these give women a sense of belonging in governance and strengthen their role as home builders,” Donatus said.

He commended Hon. Chinedu Ogah and his wife for organising the meeting, stressing that their efforts have fostered inclusiveness in leadership and offered rural women an opportunity to deliberate on issues affecting them.

The Commissioner also highlighted the presence of government officials, including the Secretary to the State Government and the Commissioner for Women Affairs, as a clear demonstration of the government’s commitment to supporting women-focused programmes.

“August has been taken as a time when women come together to discuss matters concerning them, promote peace, and push for inclusivity in governance. It is very encouraging, and you can see everyone here is happy,” he added.

Dr. Donatus urged women to embrace such gatherings, which he described as both training and capacity building, while also using the opportunity to reform their homes and strengthen their roles as family builders.
