After more than four months of restrictions, residents of Amasiri in Edda Local Government Area of Ebonyi State can finally resume normal life as the state government has officially lifted the curfew imposed following the January violence in Okporojo village.

The announcement was made on Monday, May 4, 2026, at the Government House in Abakaliki after a closed-door security meeting. The State Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Ene Yetunde Kolawole, confirmed that the curfew has been completely lifted, allowing unrestricted movement and economic activities to resume.

Kolawole revealed that several suspects linked to the crisis have been arrested and remain under surveillance. She added that their identities may be made public as investigations continue. To sustain peace, security personnel will maintain a presence in the area, while residents have been urged to remain law-abiding and cooperate with authorities.

In separate remarks, the State Attorney General, Ben Uruchi Odo; Commissioner for Information, Ikeuwa Omebe; and Head of Service, Ritamary Okoro, explained that the decision followed extensive consultations. According to them, appeals from community elders, leaders, and stakeholders, alongside formal commitments to peace from the affected communities, influenced the government’s action.

They described the lifting of the curfew as a deliberate step toward justice, unity, and long-term stability.

The government has also ordered the immediate reopening and rehabilitation of schools and healthcare facilities affected by the crisis. In addition, civil servants who were redeployed during the unrest are to begin returning to their duty posts.

Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, the Ebonyi State Government assured residents that efforts are ongoing to fully restore peace and rebuild trust across the affected communities.
