Imo Govt. Declares Emergency on Aged-long Refuse Dump at Hausa/Naze Market
By Kelechi Ugo
The Imo State owned Eastern Waste Management Corporation,(EWAMAC) has declared a state of emergency over a long-standing refuse dump at the Hausa/Naze Cluster Market in Owerri North Local Government Area of the State, pledging immediate action to address the environmental hazard.
The dump, which has existed for over seven years, has been a source of concern for traders and residents due to its persistent foul odour and potential health risks. Many traders have expressed relief following assurances from the agency that evacuation of the waste will commence without delay.
Speaking at the site, the Chairman of the market, Alhaji Abdullahi Abdulsalam, described the situation as both unsightly and dangerous. He warned that the continued presence of the refuse could trigger an outbreak of airborne diseases if not urgently addressed. Abdulsalam, who also serves as Coordinator of Non-Indigenes in Imo State, noted that previous waste handlers had made attempts to clear the site before their operations were discontinued.
In a telephone interview, the Operational Manager of EWAMAC, Nnamdi Gogo Okwusa, confirmed that plans were underway to evacuate the dump. He reiterated the agency’s commitment to restoring cleanliness across the State and called on residents to adopt proper waste disposal practices by using designated trash facilities.
The intervention follows the recent inauguration of EWAMAC as the new waste management authority in Imo State, replacing former operators accused of failing to effectively manage refuse in Owerri and its surrounding areas.
The clean-up effort is expected to bring much-needed environmental relief to traders and visitors at the bustling Hausa/Naze Market, while also reducing potential public health risks associated with prolonged waste accumulation.
