11,500 Students Admitted as Ebonyi State University Holds 28th Matriculation
About 11,500 students have been officially admitted into Ebonyi State University, as the institution conducted its 28th matriculation ceremony at its permanent site in Ezzangbo, Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
The ceremony, which witnessed an impressive turnout of parents, government officials and well-wishers, recorded the highest student intake since the state was created in 1996.
In his address, Governor Francis Nwifuru warned the newly admitted students to avoid cultism, examination malpractice, sorting and other social vices that could jeopardize their academic future.
Represented by the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Donatus Ilang, the governor reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to strengthening the education sector.
He outlined key interventions by the state government in the university, including increased monthly subvention, salary enhancements for staff, payment of outstanding debts and infrastructural upgrades aimed at improving the learning environment. He commended the management for efforts toward restoring the institution’s academic reputation and urged the students to remain disciplined and focused.
The Vice Chancellor, Michael Ugota Awoke, charged both staff and students to uphold integrity and excellence. He stressed that lecturers must avoid any form of extortion or unethical practices, noting that strict sanctions await offenders.
Prof. Awoke disclosed that upon assumption of office, his administration met significant accreditation challenges, particularly in the Faculties of Engineering and Environmental Studies, as well as seven other academic programmes. He announced that five of the affected programmes have now secured full accreditation.
Highlighting reforms introduced by his administration, the Vice Chancellor said the university has been fully digitalized, enabling students to process admissions and pay school fees online with ease. He maintained that cultism, examination malpractice and sexual harassment have been decisively tackled within the institution.
Also speaking, the university’s orator and former Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Prof. Chike Onwe, cautioned students against engaging in examination fraud or paying for grade upgrades.
The matriculation ceremony was attended by the Pro-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Abraham Chukwuma Nwali, members of the governing council, university management, parents and other dignitaries.
