The Ebonyi State ICT University, Oferekpe Agbaja, Izzi Local Government Area, has commenced full academic activities with over 200 students already admitted and currently undergoing lectures, Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru has confirmed.
The governor made the disclosure while addressing journalists at his country home in Oferekpe Agbaja during the 2026 Oferekpe Day celebration, dismissing speculations that the newly established institution was dormant or yet to begin operations.
Governor Nwifuru stated unequivocally that the university is fully functional, stressing that academic sessions are ongoing in line with regulatory approvals.
“I explained to them what is going on at the ICT University. The institution is already alive. Students have been admitted, and the academic session is already on,” the governor said.
He urged youths across Ebonyi State to take advantage of the institution, describing education as a critical tool for individual growth and societal advancement.
Clarifying concerns about admission capacity and institutional preparedness, Nwifuru explained that the university is operating strictly within the guidelines of the National Universities Commission (NUC).
According to him, although the NUC approved a maximum student intake of about 1,000, the regulatory body advised the institution to commence operations gradually.
“At the initial period, they were told to start with about 200 to 300 students, even though the approved maximum is 1,000. As I am talking to you, they have admitted over 200 students, and they are already in school,” he explained.
The governor linked the state government’s expansion of access to education to its broader efforts at tackling social vices, particularly drug abuse among youths.
“Drug abuse is eating deep into our children, starting from secondary school. Education is the best solution. Once people are educated, they will know what is right and what is wrong,” Nwifuru said.
Reacting to a viral video involving Ebonyi girls allegedly trafficked for sexual exploitation, the governor confirmed that the victims had been rescued and reunited with their families.
“The girls have been recovered and reunited with their parents. We are doing something to rehabilitate them, but that is not for social media,” he added.
Governor Nwifuru further assured that the state government is strengthening its industrial and rehabilitation centres, noting that key facilities would soon be fully operational to enhance youth empowerment, skills acquisition, and economic self-reliance across Ebonyi State.
