A Lagos-based automobile businessman and Managing Director/Chairman of Igwemac Autos Ltd, Chief Igwe Amechi Justus, has narrowly escaped death following a violent attack by suspected armed robbers along the Ebonyi–Enugu boundary.
The incident occurred a few days after the New Year at Onuzo–Nwezza Junction, near the border communities between Ebonyi and Enugu states, as the businessman was reportedly returning to his base.
According to eyewitness accounts, Chief Justus was trailed by the attackers before being ambushed by a four-man gang operating with two vehicles, including a Mercedes-Benz. His 2015 Toyota RAV4 was reportedly double-crossed at a local market junction around 5:30 p.m., forcing him to stop.
An eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the attackers ordered the victim out of his vehicle and immediately assaulted him. “Two of them were armed with pistols, while the others came out with metallic objects that looked like batons. They attacked him repeatedly,” the witness said.
The source added that the attack caused panic in the area, forcing residents and passersby to observe from a distance for fear of being harmed.
Another source described the incident as disturbing, noting that the manner of operation suggested the attackers were professionals, possibly hired.
After overpowering the victim, the assailants reportedly made away with several valuables, including a Samsung Fold 6 mobile phone valued at about ₦1.6 million, cash amounting to $2,400 and over ₦400,000, an expensive wristwatch, and other personal items yet to be fully confirmed.
When residents began making phone calls, possibly to alert security agencies, the attackers allegedly fled the scene in their vehicles.
Good Samaritans later rushed the injured businessman to a nearby hospital, which reportedly declined admission due to the severity of his condition. He was subsequently transferred to Lagos, where he is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital and is said to be under intensive medical care.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official statement from security agencies regarding the incident.
