SALUTE TO PHILANTHROPISTS PAR EXCELLENCE
By Patrick Mgbaja
Winston Churchill once remarked, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” In a similar vein, Mahatma Gandhi taught that “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”
These timeless words perfectly capture the lives and legacies of two remarkable individuals whose generosity continues to illuminate the communities of Egbere Mmiri Eziudo, Umuoree Eziudo, and Owuahia Eziudo—High Chief M. C. Obi, the Ugwumba Mbaise Gburughuru, and his beloved wife, Chief Mrs. Stella Obi, Osodieme.
The old saying that “Behind every successful man is a woman” could not be more fitting. Together, this noble couple has redefined philanthropy, transforming infrastructure, fostering development, and uplifting countless families through their selfless acts.
Today, it is important to highlight a few of their notable contributions, so that when we say “they have touched lives,” every reader knows it is the pure truth.
1. Strengthening Healthcare Access
High Chief and Lolo Obi constructed and equipped a modern health centre for the people of Umuoree. They further provided solar street lights across the community—an invaluable gift that enhances security, commerce, and quality of life.
2. Transforming Educational Infrastructure
Their passion for education is evident in their renovation of several school blocks, including the Central School, Eziudo—my own Alma Mater. This edifice will be officially handed over to the school authorities on December 30. On behalf of the pupils and alumni of this great institution, I extend heartfelt gratitude. May God bless you abundantly.
3. Enhancing Community Water Supply
They also constructed a solar-powered borehole at Nkwo Eziudo Market beside the Orukwu Building, a location central to community activities and meetings of the Okanga Ozirir of Eziudo.
4. Empowering Skilled Youth
It is on record that more than thirty individuals have been trained in various skills of their choice and empowered with ₦100,000 each—an investment that continues to yield economic independence for many families.
5. Extending Compassion Beyond Boundaries
High Chief Obi and his amiable wife have paid countless hospital bills for people within and outside the Eziudo communities. Their compassion has restored health, dignity, and hope where it was nearly lost.
Indeed, “Madu oga egbu agu ole tupu akpo ya ogbu agu?”
True greatness is not declared—it is demonstrated.
And in every sense, the Obis have demonstrated it.
Upcoming Recognition
In recognition of their sterling contributions, the three traditional rulers of Eziudo communities will, on December 30, 2025, confer prestigious traditional titles on this illustrious son and daughter of ours. This honour is both a mark of appreciation and an encouragement to continue their good works.
The conferring royal fathers include:
HRH Eze Okechukwu Adiuku (Enyi Mmiri I of Egbere Mmiri Eziudo)
HH Eze Patrick Elechi Abii (Udo IV, Eze Oha III of Umuoree Autonomous Community)
HRH Eze Charles Ogugua (Mmiri Na Ezoroha I of Owuahia Autonomous Community)
A Celebration of Generosity
The Holy Scriptures affirm in Luke 6:38: “Give, and it will be given to you… running over.”
And as the proverb says, “The generous heart is the happy heart.”
In this spirit, and deeply moved by the impact of their philanthropy, the Federation of Mbaise Media Professionals (FMMP)—comprising media practitioners from the three local government areas of Mbaise—extends warm and heartfelt congratulations to High Chief M. C. Obi and Chief Mrs. Stella Obi.
Your legacy of service has become a beacon of hope for generations.
We salute you.
