Fresh Controversy Rocks Imo as FIDA Faces Bias Allegations in Child-Custody Dispute

By Our Reporter

A fresh wave of controversy has erupted in Imo State following allegations that the Federation of International Women Lawyers (FIDA), Imo Chapter, may have interfered unduly in a sensitive child-custody case involving claims of child molestation.

According to available information, a woman petitioned FIDA alleging that her husband sexually abused their two daughters, aged six and four. After receiving the petition, FIDA reportedly advised her to initiate legal action at the Family Court— a recommendation critics argue was made without adequate preliminary investigation.

The accused husband has strongly denied the allegations. He has filed a civil defamation suit before the High Court, insisting that the claims are fabricated, malicious, and part of an attempt to prevent him from seeing his children. He is also requesting an independent and comprehensive probe into the matter.

The dispute intensified when fresh claims emerged against Barr. Vivian Ottih, counsel to the petitioner and current Assistant Secretary of FIDA, Imo State. She was alleged to have boasted that her position in the association would influence the outcome of the case. Sources claim she purportedly stated that “Family Court decisions are based on FIDA’s reports,” a comment that has raised public concern over fairness, neutrality, and due process.

As at the time of filing this report, FIDA has not issued an official statement addressing the allegations or clarifying its role in the case.

The matter is scheduled to be heard at Magistrate Court 7, Owerri, on Thursday, 27 November 2025, with both parties expected to appear alongside their legal representatives.

Imo Journalists will continue to monitor the proceedings and provide timely updates as the story unfolds.
