Distinguished Senator Osita Bonaventure Izunaso, Esq., representing Imo West Senatorial District at the National Assembly, has facilitated the release of 17 convicted inmates from the Imo State Correctional Centre, Owerri, as part of his humanitarian outreach to mark his 59th birthday celebration.
Speaking during the visit, Senator Izunaso explained that the gesture was part of his personal covenant with God to always extend compassion and support to the less privileged members of society.
The Senator, who clocked 59 on October 29, 2025, revealed that the initiative was inspired by his second daughter, Barrister Cassy Izunaso, who suggested that this year’s birthday celebration should include the release of inmates and support for indigent citizens.
Senator Izunaso, a two-time lawmaker and passionate philanthropist, is the founder of the Kpakonado Foundation, established ten years ago to empower the underprivileged, sponsor education, and provide skills acquisition programs for the physically challenged in Imo State and other parts of Nigeria.
Welcoming the Senator and his entourage, the Controller of Corrections, Imo State Command, Mr. Mike O. Okorie, commended Senator Izunaso’s magnanimity and concern for the welfare of inmates. He explained that the primary goal of the Nigerian Correctional Service is to reform, rehabilitate, and reintegrate inmates into society as responsible citizens.
Controller Okorie praised the Senator for offering to offset fines that prevented some inmates from gaining their freedom, urging other well-meaning Nigerians to emulate such acts of kindness. He also appealed for greater public-private collaboration in improving correctional facilities and training programs for inmates.
“The government’s resolve to equip inmates with meaningful skills is aimed at transforming their lives and preparing them for productive reintegration into society after their release,” Okorie stated.
Senator Izunaso was accompanied by his traditional ruler, HRH Eze Victor Ogwurumba, and several notable leaders, including Chief Irobi Uchenna, Chief Takana of Biaduo, Hon. Barr. Robert Okwuego, and Barr. Uche Nwosu, among others.
The event was highlighted by musical and cultural performances by inmates of the Owerri Correctional Centre, adding color and emotion to the day’s celebration of freedom, compassion, and humanity.
