A new chapter has begun for the people of Ihitte-Afor-Ukwu in Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, as they crown a new traditional ruler, Eze Dr. Devine Okwudiri Nwandu, popularly known as Akaraka III of the ancient Ihitte-Afor-Ukwu Kingdom.

The historic coronation ceremony took place on Saturday, 16th August 2025 at the Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Council Headquarters. The occasion was filled with pomp and pageantry, attracting dignitaries, traditional rulers, and well-meaning guests from within and outside the state.

In line with tradition, Eze Nwandu was formally crowned on Friday, 15th August 2025, followed by grand celebrations and the observance of the Iriji (New Yam) Festival at his majestic Obioha Palace.

Adding excitement to the festivities, the newly installed monarch reintroduced a modernized version of the traditional wrestling competition among youths from the three clans of Ihitte-Afor-Ukwu. This cultural contest aimed to promote heritage, unity, and youth empowerment. The highlight of the event was the cash prize of ₦2 million awarded to the overall wrestling champion.

Wrestling Contest Winners:

1st Place: Thaddeus Ononiwu – ₦700,000

2nd Place: Ebegbulem Peter – ₦500,000

3rd Place: Somtochukwu Enwerem – ₦300,000

4th Place: Chukwunenye – ₦200,000

The competition was professionally coordinated by Chika Umeyo, Chief Coach of the Imo State Wrestling Team and President of the Imo State Wrestling Association, in partnership with officials from the Imo State Primary Healthcare Department. The coordination and structure of the event earned applause from guests, media, and the local community.

Speaking at the event, Eze Dr. Nwandu emphasized that traditional wrestling has long been a vital part of the Ihitte-Afor-Ukwu culture. He pledged to revive such customs to foster discipline, self-reliance, and cultural pride among the youth.

 "Poverty, idleness, and hopelessness are breeding grounds for drug abuse and criminality among our youths. We must work together to replace these vices with purpose and empowerment," the monarch stated passionately.

Our correspondent reports that Eze Nwandu, a renowned businessman and philanthropist with a legacy of service and excellence, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from community leaders, friends, and well-wishers. He affirmed his commitment to driving sustainable development and peace in Ihitte-Afor-Ukwu.

They all described the new monarch as a "God-sent leader", confident that his reign will usher in prosperity and unity.

Guests were also treated to electrifying performances from top musicians and cultural groups, including Ada Zion, King Ababanna, and Oku Nwa-Amama, creating a festive atmosphere that crowned the weekend as one of the most memorable in recent times.

Indeed, with the enthronement of Eze Devine Okwudiri Nwandu (Akaraka III), Ihitte-Afor-Ukwu embarks on a renewed journey of cultural revival, youth empowerment, and community development.
