Flood Disaster in Ebonyi: Governor Nwifuru Sympathizes with Victims, Pledges Support

Ebonyi State Governor, Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has expressed deep sorrow over the recent flood disaster that devastated several communities across the state, resulting in loss of lives and extensive property damage.

The affected areas include Enohia Itim and Kpoghirikpo in Afikpo Local Government Area; Azuoto and Okpuitumo in Abakaliki LGA; as well as multiple communities in Ikwo LGA, namely Ndiagu Amagu, Item Amagu, Ochieyimu Amagu, Akahufu Amagu, Ebushike Amagu, Obegu Item, Odeligbo Amagu, Enyimagu, Ndiagu Echara, and Ekpaomaka.

According to a statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Monday Uzor, the flood, which struck penultimate Friday and began to recede by Monday, left behind significant destruction and casualties.

Governor Nwifuru extended his condolences to families who lost loved ones and assured that the government would work closely with local authorities, affected communities, and relevant agencies to provide immediate relief and long-term rehabilitation support.

“I sincerely condole with the families who lost loved ones, as well as with all who suffered losses during this unfortunate incident,” the Governor said. “As a government, we stand with you in this moment of grief, and I assure you that my administration will provide the necessary support to help you recover and rebuild.”

He also urged residents to factor in the realities of climate change in their planning and livelihoods, emphasizing the importance of adopting integrated flood risk management strategies to mitigate future disasters.
