Traders at the International Modern Market in Egbeada/Ubomiri, Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State, will soon head to the polls to elect a new executive body to oversee the market’s affairs.

In a telephone interview with journalists on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, the Executive Chairman of Mbaitoli LGA, Hon. Ifunanya Lactus Nwanegwo, announced that preparations are underway to conduct free, fair, and credible elections that will usher in a fresh team of leaders for the Egbeada/Ubomiri International Market.

Hon. Nwanegwo explained that the move follows a vote of no confidence passed on the interim leadership headed by Mr. Ihunyere Chima.

He emphasized that the election date will be announced after concluding necessary consultations with key market stakeholders.

“The Ihunyere Chima-led caretaker committee was put in place as a temporary measure to manage the market’s affairs,” Hon. Nwanegwo stated. “Now, we are taking steps to ensure that individuals with integrity and leadership capacity assume the market’s helm.”

Responding to allegations of illegal sale of shops by the ousted caretaker committee, Hon. Nwanegwo issued a strong warning to traders and prospective buyers.

He cautioned against engaging in unauthorized shop purchases, noting that those who do so risk losing their investments.

“Anyone who purchases a shop illegally does so at their own risk. When the time comes, they will have themselves to blame,” he warned.

The Council Chairman reiterated his commitment to restoring order and transparency to the management of the market, ensuring that its operations reflect fairness and accountability.
