The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Ebonyi State Chapter, has warned that the continued recycling of failed and underperforming political office holders poses a serious threat to democratic growth and development.
The State Chairman of NYCN, Comrade Douglas Ochishi, made the assertion on Friday during a press conference in Abakaliki to mark Easter 2026.
Ochishi said the re-emergence of politicians with little or no record of impactful leadership represents a major setback for the state and the country at large.
“The continued recycling of failed and underperforming politicians represents a dangerous setback to our democratic and developmental aspirations. We must collectively reject this regressive trend,” he said.
He noted that the build-up to the 2026 grassroots elections, party congresses, and the 2027 general elections presents a defining moment for citizens to reshape the political landscape.
According to him, Nigerians must move away from the era of “political entitlement without impact” and demand accountability, transparency, and measurable performance from leaders.
The NYCN chairman called for the emergence of credible and visionary leaders, particularly youths, who are ready to provide purposeful leadership.
He urged young people to actively participate in politics and governance, stressing that their involvement is critical to the future of the state and the nation.
“Youth participation is not optional; it is essential. The future of our state and nation depends on the courage of young people to move from passive observers to active participants,” Ochishi said.
He also encouraged eligible voters to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), describing them as a vital tool for electing responsive leaders and removing ineffective ones through democratic means.
While commending the administration of , Ochishi emphasized the need for all public office holders to uphold accountability and deliver tangible results.
He further warned against electoral violence and other acts capable of disrupting the peace, urging security agencies to ensure a conducive environment throughout the election period.
