AGWA CLAN DECRIES POLITICAL MARGINALIZATION, DEMANDS EQUITY AHEAD OF 2027 ELECTIONS

The Niger Delta Progressive Youth Movement (NDPYM) has raised concerns over what it described as the longstanding political marginalization of the Agwa Clan in Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State, calling for urgent corrective measures ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking at a press conference, the Coordinator of the group, Prince Maduba Chukwudi Francis (OluImo), said the Agwa Clan—situated within the Ohaji/Egbema/Oguta/Oru West Federal Constituency and Orlu Senatorial Zone—has been systematically excluded from key political positions despite its significant contributions to the state’s economy.

According to him, the clan remains one of the major economic backbones of Imo State, owing to its rich deposits of oil and gas as well as its strong agricultural base. He noted that assets such as Adapalm Nigeria Limited have played a crucial role in food production and job creation, further underscoring the clan’s importance.

“Despite these immense contributions, the Agwa Clan has continued to suffer systematic exclusion from political representation and decision-making processes,” Francis said. “This persistent marginalization undermines the principles of equity, fairness, and inclusive governance.”

The group outlined a number of demands aimed at addressing what it described as a historical imbalance. Chief among them is the formal recognition of the injustice meted out to the Agwa people over the years.

It also identified the 2027 general elections as a critical opportunity to correct these imbalances, urging all political parties to zone their tickets for key elective positions within the federal constituency to candidates from the Agwa Clan.

“This is not merely a request, but a call for justice and equity,” the NDPYM coordinator emphasized.

The group further called on political leaders and stakeholders across the state to demonstrate genuine commitment to inclusiveness by giving the Agwa Clan a fair chance to produce elected representatives.

In addition, the movement appealed to the Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma, to intervene and ensure a more balanced political structure. It stressed that the governor’s leadership is vital in promoting unity and equitable development across the state.

The NDPYM warned that continued exclusion of the Agwa Clan from political representation is unacceptable, insisting that the people deserve a voice commensurate with their contributions to the state and the nation.

While reaffirming its commitment to peaceful and democratic engagement, the group cautioned that prolonged injustice could undermine trust in governance.

“We will continue to advocate, mobilize, and engage constructively until fairness and equity are achieved,” Francis stated.

The group also called on the media to amplify its message in the interest of justice, unity, and sustainable development in Imo State.
