The Ebonyi State Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, Barrister Eric Kelechi Igwe, has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the establishment of a Nigerian Army Training Centre in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.

Igwe, who served as Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State from 2015 to 2023, described the approval as a bold and strategic decision that reflects the President’s commitment to equitable development, national security and inclusivity across all regions of the country.

In a statement issued to journalists on Monday, Igwe said the proposed Abakaliki Army Training Centre would complement existing military training facilities in Kaduna and Osogbo, while further deepening the decentralisation of army training infrastructure in Nigeria.

He noted that the project would not only strengthen the operational efficiency of the Nigerian Army but also stimulate economic growth in Ebonyi State through job creation, infrastructural development and increased commercial activities, while enhancing peace and stability in the Southeast.

According to him, the training centre is expected to accommodate and train thousands of recruits, with emphasis on advanced infantry tactics and modern military technology, in line with President Tinubu’s agenda to modernise the nation’s defence system and respond effectively to emerging security threats.

Igwe, who is also a Board Member of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), said the Southeast had for years advocated greater inclusion in national defence and security initiatives, describing the approval as a historic step towards strengthening national unity and promoting regional balance.

He urged media organisations, Southeast stakeholders and the general public to give maximum support and visibility to the project to ensure its smooth and timely implementation.

“This development will go a long way in reinforcing Nigeria’s security architecture and fast-tracking socio-economic development in the Southeast. We sincerely commend Mr President for his resolve to build a safer, stronger and more united Nigeria,” Igwe stated.
