The Imo State Police Command has intensified security operations in Okigwe following a deadly attack that claimed the lives of five residents in the Ajanaumuna community, Ezinachi, Okigwe Local Government Area.

According to a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Okoye Henry, the attack occurred on the night of August 22, 2025, at approximately 10:30 p.m., when suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), stormed the village, shooting indiscriminately.

The victims were identified as Edeh George, a member of the local youth security outfit, and four others: Emeka Ezeagwula, Chikodi Ezeagwula, Chidi Chileke, and Ejike Nwankwo. In addition to the killings, the attackers reportedly set fire to the home of the youth security leader and destroyed five motorcycles.

Police operatives, responding swiftly to a distress call, evacuated the victims to the General Hospital in Okigwe, where medical personnel confirmed all five dead on arrival. One survivor is currently receiving treatment.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, who is personally leading a coordinated response alongside other security agencies and local vigilantes, vowed to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.

“This senseless and barbaric act will not go unpunished. We are leaving no stone unturned in tracking down those responsible,” CP Danjuma stated.

He offered condolences to the bereaved families, prayed for the souls of the deceased, and wished the surviving victim a speedy recovery. He also reassured the public of their safety, noting that security presence has been bolstered in Okigwe and neighboring communities.

Residents are urged to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement by providing credible and timely information that could aid in the ongoing investigation. The public can reach the Police Command through the emergency number 0803 477 3600.
