AA PETITIONS POLICE, DSS OVER ALLEGED DESTRUCTION OF CAMPAIGN BILLBOARDS IN IMO.
The Action Alliance (AA) has petitioned security agencies in Imo State over the destruction of its campaign billboards, posters and other party insignia in parts of Owerri, accusing supporters loyal to the member representing Owerri West State Constituency in the Imo State House of Assembly, Hon. Kanayo Onyemaechi, of being responsible.
In a press statement issued on Saturday, September 26, 2026, and signed by the National Secretary of the party, Hon. Vernimbe James, the AA alleged that its campaign materials were dismantled in the early hours of Friday along the Owerri-Orlu Road, Owerri-Okigwe Road and other locations in the State by the APC lawmaker's supporters.
The Party said it had photographic and video materials which, according to it, showed some individuals involved in the destruction and removal of the campaign materials.
The AA described the incident as an attack on its political activities and called on relevant security agencies to investigate the matter, identify those responsible and prosecute anyone found culpable under the law.
According to the Party, the alleged destruction was capable of undermining the right of political parties and their supporters to freely associate and campaign ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Party referenced Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, and Section 92 of the Electoral Act 2022, in asserting its right to participate in political activities.
The AA further alleged that the incident was part of an attempt to weaken its political presence in Imo State, particularly in Owerri West.
The Party appealed to the Imo State Commissioner of Police, the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS) in the State and the Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to investigate the matter.
It also said it had formally petitioned the relevant authorities and requested that those found responsible, including any alleged sponsors, be brought to justice.
The Action Alliance further demanded compensation for the campaign materials it said were destroyed and gave a seven-day period for the losses to be addressed, stating that it would pursue legal remedies if the matter was not resolved.
The Party also warned against further removal or destruction of its billboards, posters, flags and other insignia in Imo State or elsewhere.
While expressing concern over the alleged incident, the AA urged its members and supporters across Imo State to remain calm, law-abiding and vigilant, stressing that they should not take the law into their own hands.
The Party appealed to security agencies to take steps to prevent any escalation of the situation and ensure that all political parties are allowed to conduct their lawful activities without intimidation or interference.
Copies of the Party's petition were also said to have been sent to the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the DSS and the Chairman of INEC in Abuja.
The AA reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful political participation and urged all political actors in Imo State to respect the rights of other parties and allow the electorate to freely make their choices ahead of the 2027 elections.
