...   Njaba Alliance Organization insists on rotation agreement among five communities, says Atta-Nwamberi deserves a chance

By Kelechi Ugo

As political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 Imo State House of Assembly election, the demand for equitable representation in Njaba State Constituency has gained renewed attention, with the Njaba Alliance Organization advocating for Hon. Engr. Chiddy Agbasi, popularly known as Ochinanwata Njaba, to emerge as the next lawmaker representing the Constituency.

The organization, which is championing the aspiration of Atta-Nwamberi, anchored its position on the principles of equity, fairness, inclusiveness and respect for an alleged political understanding among the five major communities in Njaba Local Government Area of Imo State.

According to the group, the arrangement was designed to ensure that the communities of Amucha, Nkume, Atta, Okwudor and Umuaka have an opportunity to produce the representative of Njaba State Constituency in the Imo State House of Assembly.

However, the organization expressed concern that Atta-Nwamberi had yet to produce a representative in the state legislature since the return of democratic governance in 1999, a situation it believes deserves serious consideration as political parties prepare for the 2027 election.

For the group, the current political season presents an opportunity for stakeholders to revisit the principle of rotation and demonstrate their commitment to an inclusive political arrangement that accommodates the aspirations of all constituent communities.

Equity and Rotation: The Argument for Atta-Nwamberi

At the heart of the agitation is the belief that political representation should not be concentrated in the hands of a few communities while others continue to wait for an opportunity to participate meaningfully in governance.

The Njaba Alliance Organization argued that if the reported rotational understanding was established to promote fairness and peaceful coexistence, its implementation should be guided by consistency, mutual respect and a willingness to accommodate every community.

It maintained that Atta-Nwamberi's aspiration should be considered within the context of the need to sustain unity and strengthen confidence among the constituent communities.

The group emphasized the popular maxim, “He who goes for equity must come with clean hands,” arguing that the principles of fairness and justice must apply equally to all communities.

It also invoked the Igbo proverb, “Amutaghi ogbe nwa ka ogbue ibe ya,” to underscore the importance of equal treatment and peaceful coexistence among people who share common political and cultural interests.

According to the organization, supporting Atta-Nwamberi's aspiration would not amount to denying other communities their political rights but would instead demonstrate a willingness to give every community a fair opportunity within the constituency's political arrangement.

The group consequently appealed to political leaders, party stakeholders, traditional institutions, youth organizations and other opinion leaders in Njaba to give serious consideration to the demand for equitable representation.

Historical Representation and the Question of Fairness:

To reinforce its argument, the organization presented a record of past representation in Njaba State Constituency, which it said demonstrates the need to reconsider the distribution of the Assembly seat among the communities.

The list provided by the group is as follows:

Rt. Hon. Chuma Nnaji — Umuaka (1999–2003)

Rt. Hon. Chuma Nnaji — Umuaka (2003–2007)

Hon. Josephat Emenaha — Nkume (2007–2011)

Hon. Chino Obioha — Amucha (2011–2015)

Hon. Uju Onwudiwe — Okwudor (2015–2019)

Hon. Uju Onwudiwe — Okwudor (2019–2023)

Hon. Ozioma Benneth — Umuaka (2023–present, according to the organization)

The organization argued that the record, as presented, provides a basis for its demand that Atta-Nwamberi be given an opportunity to produce the next representative.

It maintained that a political arrangement that recognizes the aspirations of every community would promote a greater sense of belonging and reduce the possibility of disaffection arising from perceived marginalization.

Nevertheless, the group's position is that the call for rotation should be approached through dialogue, consultation and peaceful political engagement, rather than division or hostility among the communities.

For the advocates, the central issue is not merely who occupies the Assembly seat in 2027, but whether the process leading to the emergence of the next representative will command the confidence and support of the people across Njaba.

Why the Group Is Backing Chiddy Agbasi

While advancing the case for Atta-Nwamberi, the Njaba Alliance Organization has identified Hon. Engr. Chiddy Agbasi, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Njaba State Constituency, as its preferred choice for the 2027 election.

Popularly called Ochinanwata Njaba, Agbasi is a former Executive Chairman of Njaba Local Government Area. The organization believes that his experience in local government administration gives him a useful foundation for seeking election into the state legislature.

According to the group, his previous public office experience, accessibility, humanitarian activities and commitment to community development are among the qualities it considers relevant to effective legislative representation.

The organization also described Agbasi as a morally trained seminarian who fears God, adding that it believes his personal values could contribute to a responsible approach to public service.

For his supporters, the combination of administrative experience, grassroots engagement and a commitment to community welfare makes him a candidate capable of understanding the everyday concerns of ordinary people.

They argue that the office of a state legislator requires more than political popularity. It demands the ability to articulate the needs of constituents, engage relevant government institutions, support policies that improve living conditions and maintain regular contact with the people.

The group therefore expressed confidence that Agbasi, if elected, would have the opportunity to build on his previous experience and pursue initiatives that address the developmental needs of Njaba State Constituency.

From Local Government Administration to Legislative Representation

One of the considerations highlighted by the organization is Agbasi's tenure as chairman of Njaba Local Government Area.

According to the group, the distribution of electricity transformers to communities during his administration was among the interventions it considers evidence of his engagement with infrastructure-related needs.

It specifically cited Okwudor as a community that reportedly benefited from transformer distribution on two occasions during the period.

The organization believes that such interventions demonstrate the importance of practical engagement with community needs and argues that the experience could be valuable in the pursuit of development-oriented representation at the state level.

However, the group acknowledged, through its development agenda, that Njaba still requires sustained attention to employment, youth development, security, healthcare, education and the general welfare of residents.

Its expectation is that a representative who understands these challenges would be better positioned to raise relevant issues, engage stakeholders and support legislative measures that advance the constituency's interests.

For Agbasi's supporters, the desired outcome is a representative who would remain accessible to the people, listen to their concerns and work towards ensuring that the benefits of governance reach communities across the constituency.

Expectations for Njaba's Next Assembly Representative:

The Njaba Alliance Organization outlined several priority areas it expects the next lawmaker to address, including job creation, youth empowerment, improved security, accessible healthcare, quality education, respect for the rule of law and the general welfare of constituents.

These issues, the group maintained, are central to the expectations of a population seeking better opportunities, improved infrastructure and greater responsiveness from elected public officials.

It argued that the next representative should be prepared to work with community leaders, relevant ministries, government agencies and other stakeholders to identify practical solutions to challenges confronting the Constituency.

The organization further stressed that effective representation should not be measured solely by political promises but by the capacity to engage the people, pursue their legitimate interests and account for progress made during the tenure.

According to the group, the 2027 election should therefore provide an opportunity for voters to assess the experience, character, accessibility and developmental commitments of candidates seeking their mandate.

While expressing support for Agbasi, it maintained that the ultimate objective should be to secure representation that advances the collective interests of Njaba rather than the ambitions of any individual or political group.

A Call for Unity Ahead of 2027:

As the election approaches, the Njaba Alliance Organization has called on political leaders and residents of the local government area to place fairness, unity and peaceful coexistence above personal and partisan interests.

It argued that the demand for Atta-Nwamberi to have an opportunity to produce the next lawmaker should be considered as part of a broader effort to sustain trust among the five major communities.

The group also urged political stakeholders to engage in constructive dialogue and ensure that differences over the Assembly seat do not undermine the longstanding relationships among the people of Njaba.

For the organization, equitable representation remains an important consideration in building a political environment where every community feels recognized and valued.

It expressed optimism that the 2027 election could provide an opportunity to address the demand for representation by Atta-Nwamberi, while also presenting the people with an opportunity to elect a candidate they believe can effectively articulate their aspirations.

As political consultations continue, the organization's message remains that fairness, inclusion and accountability should guide the search for the next representative of Njaba State Constituency.

It concluded by praying for the peace, unity and development of Njaba Local Government Area and expressing support for the political aspiration of Hon. Engr. Chiddy Agbasi.

For the people of Njaba, the debate over the 2027 Assembly seat is increasingly framed around a fundamental question: how can the constituency sustain political unity while ensuring that every community has a fair opportunity to participate in representative governance?.

The answer, the Njaba Alliance Organization believes, lies in dialogue, mutual understanding and a genuine commitment to equity.
